Forgotify Lets You Listen To Millions Of Unheard Songs That Have Never Been Streamed On Spotify

first_imgThere are over thirty million songs on the streaming service Spotify, with more and more added each day. While some well-known songs rack up millions of listens, there are also millions of songs that have never or only partially streamed by users. Last week, a Reddit thread brought to our attention an old and underused feature of the streaming service Spotify called Forgotify, which seeks to change that one song at a time. The Spotify offshoot was developed back in 2014, but three years later, it’s still as cool as ever. Forgotify compiles a database of all the songs with zero plays on Spotify (which the site said numbered in at around four million back in 2014) and then lets listeners take a listen to these unheard tracks. As the creators of Forgotify — Lane Jordan, J Hausmann, Nate Gagnon — state on the site’s website, “We were . . . shocked to learn that millions of Spotify songs had been played only partially or never at all. A musical travesty, really. So we set out to give these neglected songs another way to reach your earholes, and Forgotify was born.”Spotify Teams With Accuweather To Generate Playlists Based On The Weather Near YouIt’s beyond cool to get a reminder of the vast array of music that exists out in the world, and Forgotify makes that beyond apparent. The first few tracks offered to me were a chapter from a self-help audiobook, a big-band rendition of the Washington & Lee fight song, and an unmastered track from an unsearchable artist dubbed “Home Recording Project” off their aptly named album, Home Recordings. With many of the tracks that pop-up on Forgotify, it’s pretty easy to connect the dots as to why the songs are unheard. Many of the tracks it pulls are frequently fairly esoteric, often pulling recordings of classical works or songs from the early 20th century whose listenership may not be a tech-savvy and more content sticking to CDs. While some of the songs may not be right up your alley immediately, with patience, you do find some hidden gems that may whet your musical palette. You can check out the website for yourself here, and with any luck, maybe you’ll encounter a new favorite tune or two.last_img
